The maximum size of the flatfish is 90-100 cm. The body length is usually about 50-60 cm. It is smooth with small scales. There is a bony ridge behind the eye. The upper side is brown or green-brown with irregularly distributed bright red or orange spots. Some may also have smaller white spots, especially when living in places where there are white shells or pebbles in the sediment. The underside is white. The lateral line is straight and slightly curved above the pectoral fin. The dorsal fin reaches to the eye. More than 30 vertebrae. The mouth is small with rows of teeth, often molar-shaped, with the upper jaw almost touching the lower eye and the chin protruding. The fins have no spines.
