Herring is the common name for most of the Clupeidae fish. They mostly swim in groups on the shoals or near the shore. Among them, there are three most common and commercially valuable herring species, all of which belong to the genus Clupe, and their catch accounts for about 90% of the total herring catch. Among the three Clupe fish, the Atlantic herring has the largest catch, accounting for more than half. These three fish are generally found in shallow temperate waters of the North Pacific, North Atlantic, Baltic Sea and the west coast of South America. In addition, there are also some fish called herrings that are found in the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal.
